North Regional Branch Library Closes Feb. 27 & 28 for Improvements

Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center’s North Regional Branch Library at 822 McArthur Road is closed Mon., Feb. 27 and Tue., Feb. 28, while the check-out desk is modified to accommodate Radio Frequency Identification technology (RFID).

While work is being completed at North Regional Branch, customers may return materials through the drop box there or to any other library location. North Regional Branch will reopen on Wed., Feb. 29 at 9 a.m.

RFID technology enables communication through radio waves to track library materials. As a result, customers can check out their own materials, virtually eliminating waiting in line for service. All other CCPL&IC library locations are already utilizing this technology.

Book Club Kits Simplify Your Next Meeting

Book Club Survival Kits are now available for check out. With 14 kits and new ones coming soon, you have lots of choices for your book club meetings. These kits come in a Friends of the Library book bag and will equip you and your club with ten copies of your chosen book, a sign-out sheet to track who has the books, and a list of questions and reviews to help get your discussion going. You’ll also find information about the author, and read-alikes for both the book and the author. The Book Club Survival Kits are available to check out for a period of eight weeks and may be reserved in advance by calling 483-7727 ext. 250.

Your Library Adds Playaway View™ all-in-one Video Player To Thrill Kids and Parents Alike

Your library is excited to announce the arrival of Playaway View, offering library customers the first portable all-in-one video player.

The pre-loaded video player offers access to award-winning programs from top children’s content providers such as PBS KIDS, National Geographic, Sesame Street and TumbleBooks, among others, providing portable educational and entertaining programming that was designed with libraries and kids in mind.

With over 100 titles available on Playaway View and more to come each month, each View is preloaded with multiple videos to entertain even the youngest customers for hours at a time. A variety of popular television episodes, animated picture books, and curriculum-based learning is offered for pre-kindergarten through high school.

Cumberland County Emergency Services has contracted with Emergency Communications Network to license its CodeRED high-speed notification service. The CodeRED system provides county officials the ability to quickly deliver weather warnings and other urgent messages to targeted areas or to the entire county. You can sign up by clicking here.

Emergency Services Director Kenny Currie cautioned that such systems are only as good as the telephone number database supporting them.

"If your phone number is not in the database, you will not be called," Currie said. The system will give individuals and businesses the ability to add their own phone numbers directly into the system's database.

“No one should automatically assume his or her phone number is included,” Currie said. Individuals and businesses can also sign up through the County’s website and follow the link to the "CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment" page.

Residents can supply as many phone numbers for one address as they choose; however, they cannot supply numerous addresses for one phone number. Citizens can also supply email addresses and choose to receive text messages. At the bottom of the link, they will notice the Weather Warning box. This is where they choose whether or not they wish to receive the weather warnings, and if so, which warnings they want to receive (flash flood, tornado, and/or severe weather).

Citizens without Internet access may call the Emergency Management Office at 910-678-7641 M-F from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to provide their information over the phone. Required information includes first and last name, street address (physical address, no P.O. boxes), city, state, zip code, and primary phone number.

All businesses should register, as well as all individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the past year, and those who use a cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number.

“CodeRED allows geographically based delivery, which means street addresses are required to ensure emergency notification calls are received by the proper individuals in a given situation. The system works for cell phones too, but we need to have an associated street address to provide relevant messages," Currie said.

“CodeRED gives those who want to be included an easy and secure method for inputting information. The data collected will only be used for emergency notification purposes,” Currie said. Questions should be directed to the Emergency Management Office at 910-678-7641.

Library’s $100K Grant Provides Technology to Better Serve Cumberland County

Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center has been awarded a $100,000Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant to purchase equipment to fully implement Radio Frequency Identification Technology to better serve the residents of Cumberland County.

Upon learning that the library received the grant, Library Director Jody Risacher said, “This is a huge step in providing the very best customer service possible and will help us extend RFID technology to all library locations.” West Regional Branch Library and Bordeaux Branch Library already utilize RFID technology.

RFID technology, which enables communication through radio waves, transfers data between library materials and an electronic tag attached to the materials for the purpose of identification and tracking. As a result, customers can checkout their own materials, which virtually eliminates waiting in line for service and improves staff efficiency. Work on the six locations, which remain open during the project, begins immediately and is planned to cause as little inconvenience as possible to library customers.

Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center received one of the seven competitive grants that were awarded for fiscal year 2011-2012 specifically for technology. These federal funds are investments that help libraries deliver relevant and up-to-date services for their communities. The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners also approved a budget allocation to complete this project.

This grant is made possible through funding from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources.
