Celebrate 31 Days of Love

In celebration of “Adopt a Shelter Dog Month” during the month of October, Cumberland County Public Library is promoting 31 Days of Love with a pet supply drive benefiting the animals sheltered at the Cumberland County Department of Animal Control and a series of programming, including adoption events.

Throughout the month, the public is invited to drop off donations at any of the eight library branch locations.  In addition to the donation drive, each library branch is hosting pet-themed special programs:
  • Headquarters Library
    • Build a Cat Castle - Saturday, Oct. 13, 10 a.m.
      • Make your favorite feline a cardboard castle worthy of your pet's status in your household.
  • Bordeaux Branch
    • Adoption Event - Friday, Oct. 19, 1-4 p.m.
    • Not Just Story Time: Pet Edition - Wednesday, Oct. 24, 3:30 p.m.
      • Stories, activities and a craft to celebrate the amazing world of pets. Grades K-5
  • Cliffdale Regional Branch
    • 31 Days of Love Pet Craft - Wednesday, Oct. 17, 10 a.m.
      • Make a homeless pet a toy. All toys will be donated to the Cumberland County Animal Shelter. Registration is required. Supplies will be provided.
    • Paws for Reading - Friday, Oct. 19, 4 p.m.
      • Practice reading out loud to a four-legged friend. The dogs from Love on a Leash enjoy listening to stories of all kinds and are a great way to encourage shy or reluctant readers. Bring your favorite book or choose one of ours. All ages.
    • Adoption Event - Monday, Oct. 22, 1-4 p.m
  • East Regional Branch
    • Crafturday - Saturday, Oct. 13, 2 p.m.
  • Hope Mills Branch
    • Paws for Reading - Friday, Oct. 12, 4 p.m.
      • Read a book with our dog friends from Love on a Leash. Grades K-5
    • Adoption Event - Saturday, Oct. 15, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • North Regional Branch
    • LEGO Free Play: Celebrate Pet Month - Wednesday, Oct. 3, 3:30 p.m.
      • Make LEGO pet creations. All ages.
    • Adoption Event - Friday, Oct. 5, 1-4 p.m.
  • Spring Lake Branch
  • West Regional Branch
    • The Most Fun You Can Have with Your Dog: An Introduction to Agility Training - Wednesday, Oct. 10, 12:30 p.m.
      • Experienced dog training enthusiasts demonstrate the weaves, jumps, and tunnel races used in agility races. Agility training is fun and helps build reliability in obedience while strengthening your bond with your pet. Bring your questions, please please do not bring your dog. Registration is recommended
Adoption events are scheduled for:
·         North Regional Library – Friday, Oct. 5, 1-4 p.m.
·         Hope Mills Branch Library – Saturday, Oct. 13, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
·         Bordeaux Branch Library – Friday, Oct. 19, 1-4 p.m.
·         Cliffdale Regional Library – Monday, Oct. 22, 1-4 p.m.

Last year, 485 pounds of pet food, 177 pet toys and 51 packs of pet treats were collected through the drive and 27 pets were adopted over the course of five adoption events.
